Guidelines for Naming Tote Codes
The Hopstack system also supports a range of tote types used within a warehouse. Like location codes, these can be set up directly through the platform and allow for custom types to accommodate unique warehouse operations.
The default tote types include ORDER, PICKING, and PUTAWAY.
Naming Convention for Totes
When it comes to naming these totes, the following format is suggested:
PIC-938491–001
Each component of this format represents:
PIC: This stands for Tote or Cart Type. Depending on the specific function of the tote, it can be assigned a short code. For example, PIC for Picking, PUT for Putaway, and ORD for Order.
938491: This indicates a unique identifier for each tote. This can be either manually assigned or auto-generated by the system. By using unique identifiers, each tote can be individually tracked, aiding in inventory control and reducing the chance of misplacement.
001: This signifies the Bag Number in the tote. The system allows for varying increments to be set, depending on the number of bags each tote is designed to hold. This helps maintain an accurate count of the bags within each tote and assists in optimizing warehouse operations.
If a simpler naming scheme is required, then the following format is suggested:
PIC-001
Where the number of prefixed zeroes can be adjusted depending on the expected number of totes in the warehouse.
By adhering to this naming convention, warehouses can ensure effective tracking and management of totes. This promotes efficiency, reduces the potential for errors, and streamlines the retrieval process.
As with location codes, all team members should understand and consistently apply these guidelines for the effective functioning of the warehouse. It is important to train staff to follow these conventions consistently to maximize the utility of the Hopstack system.
