Guidelines for Naming Location Codes

In the Hopstack system, warehouses are classified into multiple location types to ensure a smooth flow of operations. Custom locations can also be added to accommodate specific warehouse layouts. The default location types include BIN, BUFFER, and OVERFLOW.

Warehouse administrators can create as many types of locations as needed in the system. The types mentioned as default are based on the Hopstack’s experience, and can be overwritten.

When it comes to naming these locations, we propose two primary conventions depending on whether the warehouse services multiple tenants or a single entity. By adhering to these guidelines, you ensure efficient location tracking and optimized warehouse operations.

Naming Convention for Multiple Tenants

When there are multiple tenants in the warehouse, you can use the following format for location codes:

CA-BIN-01-A-02

Each component of this format represents:

  • CA: This stands for Tenant or Customer Code. This should be a unique identifier that distinguishes one tenant from another. This code can be either a combination of letters, numbers, or both.

  • BIN: This refers to the Location Type. It can be BIN, BUFFER, or OVERFLOW depending on the specific warehouse area.

  • 01: This indicates the Row or Aisle number. This is generally a numeric code and should be consistent across the warehouse to avoid confusion.

  • A: This signifies the Section or Zone within a given row or aisle. Usually, this is represented by a letter.

  • 02: This represents the Rack, Bin, or Shelf number. This would be specific to a given section or zone.

Naming Convention for Single Tenant

If the warehouse does not need to distinguish between different customers or tenants, you can simplify the location code as follows:

01-A-02

This location code still follows a logical structure:

  • 01: This stands for the Row or Aisle number in the warehouse. It should be a consistent numeric code throughout.

  • A: This refers to the Section or Zone in the given row or aisle. Usually, this will be a letter code.

  • 02: This stands for the Rack, Bin, or Shelf number in the specified section or zone.

In both cases, the naming convention allows anyone familiar with the system to quickly identify and locate a particular item's placement within the warehouse. These standardized codes enhance efficiency, minimize errors, and facilitate quick item retrieval. Please ensure all team members understand and consistently apply these guidelines.
